Football speed radar: is measuring shot speed worth it?
A speed radar is one of the simplest pieces of sports technology: it gives you a number. The important question is whether that number changes how you train.
A radar is useful when you genuinely want to measure shot speed over time. It is poor value if the number is only a novelty.
What a football speed radar can — and cannot — tell you
A radar can provide an objective ball-speed reading. That can make repeated shooting sessions measurable. It cannot tell you whether the shot choice, technique or placement was good, and higher speed is not automatically better football.
Useful metric
Repeatable shot-speed trend
Use the same distance, ball and setup if you want comparisons to mean anything.
Misleading metric
One maximum number
A single fastest strike says little about match performance or finishing quality.
Buying checklist
- mph and km/h display
- hands-free operation or tripod mounting
- usable measurement range for football
- clear display outdoors
- return policy if readings are inconsistent
Amazon UK currently lists football/soccer speed radars including NET PLAYZ-style units. Treat these as training measurement tools, not performance guarantees.

You only want to know who can kick hardest once. A radar earns its keep when you use a repeatable test and track changes over time.
