Playermaker 2.0 review: more interesting than a conventional GPS vest

Independent researchNo affiliate linksUpdated October 2026

Playermaker’s defining feature is where it measures: one sensor on each boot. That creates a different proposition from upper-back GPS trackers because the system can connect physical movement with football-specific actions.

RedCard verdict

Our pick for players who specifically want technical development data as well as physical measures.

The important caveat is membership: the current kit includes 12 months, and an active plan is required to record or sync new sessions afterwards.

Why the boot position matters

A conventional GPS vest can describe how a player moved around the pitch. Playermaker is trying to add what happened at the feet. Its current platform lists more than 25 measures spanning technical and physical performance, including touches, foot usage, distance, sprinting and kicking-related measures.

That makes it particularly interesting for a developing player whose coach can turn those outputs into a training objective — for example, greater weak-foot involvement rather than simply “run more”.

The membership changes the value equation

The current product includes a 12-month membership. Playermaker says that without an active plan, historical reports remain accessible but new sessions cannot be recorded or synced. That means a three-year buyer should think of the system as hardware plus service, not a £199-style one-off gadget.

What stands out

Football-specific technical data; left/right-foot insight; indoor/outdoor use; a more distinctive development proposition than pure GPS.

Reasons to pause

Ongoing membership; more data is only valuable if player or coach understands what to change; boot-mounted wear will not suit every preference.
