Camera decision guide
Which football camera setup actually fits your team?
Start with the job, not the megapixels. The biggest differences are how the camera captures the pitch, what equipment you must bring, what happens after the match and what you keep paying for.
1 · Phone-based tracking
Lowest commitment. Useful for a parent or one grassroots team that already owns a suitable phone.
2 · Portable dedicated AI camera
Designed to capture the whole match and create a team workflow. Better when recording is routine rather than occasional.
3 · Club / venue system
For multiple teams, fixed venues, analysis staff or more demanding streaming and sharing.
Compare the workflow before the specification
| Question | Phone tracker | Portable AI camera | Club / venue system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra hardware | Mount + your phone | Dedicated camera + tripod | Varies; often specialist |
| Whole-pitch source | Usually follows one view | Often designed to retain wide/full-pitch footage | Common |
| Recurring fee | Can be none for core features | Common | Common / quote-based |
| Best fit | Parent / single team | Regular team recording | Club, academy or venue |
| Biggest question | Can you spare the phone? | Will you use the platform enough? | Does the workflow justify the cost? |
Ten questions to answer before paying
SetupCan one person erect, align and start it quickly?
No Wi-FiCan it record at an away ground with poor signal?
After the gameHow long before coaches and parents can view footage?
OwnershipCan you download originals and what happens if you cancel?
LivestreamIs it included, an add-on, or dependent on phone data?
BatteryEnough for warm-up, match, stoppage time and delays?
SharingCan coaches, players and families have controlled access?
SafeguardingAre under-18 footage and links appropriately protected?
Don't buy a dedicated camera yet if…
You only record a handful of matches, nobody will review the footage, or a phone on a safe elevated mount already answers your need. Better technology is not better value if the workflow stops after recording.
