Football tech as a Christmas present: what to check before you buy

Independent researchUpdated November 2026

A tracker or camera makes a great present only if it fits, works on Christmas Day and does not land the parents with a bill they did not expect. Check these five things first.

Our quick pick

For most young players, STATSports Academy at £220 is the safest gift: one payment, no subscription, sizes for youth and adults.

If the budget is lower, PitcheroGPS costs £120 but needs a £44 yearly membership that someone will have to pay.

Five checks before you buy

  1. Size. GPS vests come in youth and adult sizes; Playermaker straps go by shoe size. Ask a parent for chest or shoe size, or buy from a shop that allows size swaps.
  2. Age. Playermaker says it is designed for players from 8. Catapult's terms expect an adult to hold the account for under-18s.
  3. Who pays later. PitcheroGPS, Playermaker and Catapult One need a yearly membership. Agree with the parents who will pay, or choose STATSports or XbotGo.
  4. Set-up on the day. Every device needs an app download and an account. Charge it and set up the parent's account before wrapping if you can.
  5. Returns. Playermaker offers 30 days' money back and XbotGo a 30-day return policy. Keep the receipt and the packaging.

Not sure they need a gadget?

Match footage, a session with a local coach, or new boots may mean more to a young player than data. Our no-buy alternatives page has ideas, and is a GPS tracker worth it for a child? answers the question honestly.
