Before you buy

Could you solve the problem without buying another device?

Independent researchUK-focusedUpdated 31 October 2026

Independent advice should include the option to buy nothing. Start with the information you actually need, then choose the cheapest reliable way to get it.

Three cheaper routes

Need running data?

Try a watch/app route

Some football-focused Apple Watch apps record distance, speed, sprints and positioning. They can be enough for an individual who does not need a vest ecosystem.

Check match rules, watch safety and app compatibility before use.

Need match video?

Start with your phone

A phone, stable elevated mount and sensible storage/sharing routine can be enough if somebody can frame the game.

Need progress?

Use a simple log

Goals, assists, minutes, positions, coach comments and personal targets can be recorded without a sensor. For younger players, this may be more meaningful than a sprint-speed dashboard.

A free match log you can start this weekend

Copy this into a notes app or a spreadsheet and fill one row per match. After six matches you will know whether you need more data.

Watch you already own

If the player already has a GPS sports watch, its football or general workout mode records distance and speed. Check the league allows watches in matches, and compare it with a vest on our GPS tracker vs smartwatch page.

When hardware becomes worth it

Buy when the device measures something you cannot obtain reliably another way, you know how the information will change training or coaching, and you expect to use it consistently for long enough to justify the true cost.

The RedCard test

If you cannot finish the sentence “When this tells me X, I will do Y differently”, delay the purchase.
